WHD NTrak General Group Information

The Western Heritage DivisioNTrak group was formed in the spring of 1999 with 7 members and a dream. Since then we have grown and participated in one train show in the Omaha Metro area while looking for the next opportunity.

The N-Trak group exhibited four bare corner modules in their first show; we hope to quickly grow!  Since then, we have completed over XX club-owned and member-owned modules. Our membership roll is over XX.

We have an open admission policy and are actively seeking new members regardless of level of expertise. We like members of all ages experienced in model building, electronics, carpentry and other aspects of this hobby.  If you want to build your own module, help with some scenery or have rolling stock, your welcome here!

Our Mission

Western Heritage DivisioNTrak is an N-Scale Modular group within the Western Heritage Division, NMRA that was created for the purpose of building and operating N-Scale layouts and for promoting interest in N-Scale modeling and the N-Trak modular system.

The Western Heritage DivisioNTrak is dedicated to the support of the Western Heritage Division, NMRA and to educate the public about railroads, N-Scale model railroading and having FUN in the process.

What is NTrak?

NTrak is an international organization whose purpose and objective is to encourage model railroading in N-scale. NTrak got it's beginnings in 1973 by a some enthusiastic model railroaders in California, who established the standards for modular railroading.

NTrak modules are portable sections of track -- usually 4' x  2' and built to strict specifications. These sections are then combined to make large operating layouts that can be displayed at shopping malls and special events.   Because of its modular design, NTrak layouts can be made to fit virtually any size space and in a variety of shapes.  The design Also allows any modeler to bring their module to a show and connect with others to construct a giant N scale layout.

While designed for large public display layouts, NTrak modules are being used for home and club layouts. NTrak modules offer a number of advantages over a fixed layout. As a society, the Twenty-First century modelers are some what mobile.  NTrak modules make it very easy to move a layout from place to place without destroying all the work that went into it.  Living arrangements (i.e. small homes, apartments, and mobile homes) lend themselves to NTrak modules.

Module construction is easy. It has the distinct advantage of being much more manageable than building a fixed layout.  To find a club near you and more info about modular construction in NTrak, visit ntrak.org.

Western Heritage Division Membership

Western Heritage DivisioNTrak  members belong to the Western Heritage Division, NMRA of Omaha, NE, but you are not required to belong to the NTrak group unless you want to.  We look for anyone with an interest in "N" scale modular railroading to join the group.

Module Layouts

Members are free to design their modules as they desire as long as the NTrak standards and WHD NTrak guidelines for construction, track layout and electrical are followed. Western Heritage DivisioNTrak has a  standardized ballast color for the mainlines and branch lines to allow for some continuity. We encourage our members to coordinate their scenes with those of other members, but this is not mandatory. Many of our modules represent the Midwest, although each member is free to express their modeling ideas as they relate to time period and location   or railroad company.

Future Plans

We will be adding DCC on the "RED" track as soon as we are able. We are looking into the possibility of operating trains on this line in a realistic manner as possible.  Our plans are to continue to increase the number of individually owned modules, giving us more running distance and industries to switch.

We will be attempting a module building class in order to educate the public and attract new members who desire to have a module and participate in the NTrak group. We hope to set up at least five or six times per year. Some members of the Western Heritage Division, NMRA have or are building home layouts, and we encourage members to help or try a hand at operating on those when they are able.
